Some Web Access Users Can't Edit MS Office Documents

asked on June 23, 2016 Show version history

We have a few Web Access users who can't edit Word and Excel documents using Laserfiche Web Access with the Office Integrator and Office 2013. We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Office Integrator.  Tried it in Chrome and IE, both with the same result:

I get an error when opening the document:
A connection to web access cannot be made. Refresh web access and try again.

The Laserfiche Web Access Extension wasn't passing a security scan in IE after it downloaded.  I opened the downloads, right-clicked on the Laserfiche Web Access Extension, and clicked "Run Anyway."  This caused it to be installed correctly and they can now edit Office documents.

Whats the version you are using for LF ? 10 ? Are the rights correctly for the users using web access like export rights etc. ? I am assuming its only happening with word documents or all other documents doing same thing, does it give same error with pdf files ?

LF 10.1.  The rights appear to be correct for the users, they have Export.  They were able to edit documents before we upgraded 9 to 10.1.  It happens with Word and Excel documents for only some users.  PDFs continue to work fine.

Josh do this please, ask the users to try accessing same documents on a computer that you are saying works fine (for some users it works), if it does work fine, my suggestion would be rebuild the computer, microsoft is known to release updates without proper testing so could be a MS office update buggering it up, so ask these users to use a machine that actually works first, if it does not work even on a working machine, you can with certainty say something is with LF account or some permissions etc.

It will help you narrow down what could be the issue.

As the error says it seems like a connection issue not Office Integrator. It could be network or firewall issue or seomthing. Does this happen consistently or it happens sometimes for some users. Does event viewer on client side and server side say anything specific when error pop ups?

Hi Josh,

When they go to open the document through Web Access 10, they'll get prompted to checkout for editing vs. open for viewing. I assume they are clicking edit, but one thing to check.

Also, if you have the doc viewer integration setup such that it shows up in the Laserfiche Document Viewer - instead of downloading and opening up in Office - be aware that that IS read-only, so make sure the users aren't getting there and thinking that means they can no longer edit the documents.
