Question

DB Lookup makes Drop-Down values disappear

asked on June 17, 2016

Hi, I found this post that mentioned that this behavior will be fixed in 9.2 but we are running 9.2 and it is not fixed. So my question is:

Is there a hotfix, or does anyone knows which version fixes this problem?

I guess the only workaround for this is Javascript now. Thanks!

Hi Lidija, this feature has never been implemented, I will bring this back to the team and will let you know whether we can support it or not with Forms 11.

Hi Lidija, after discussions within the team, we decided not to support this in Forms 11 in order to maintain the stability for lookup rule. The future BPM server will be able to handle this for the lookup with it will be greatly expanded. For now the workaround is to using JavaScript to implement it.

Append choices to lookup result will be supported in Forms 11 since there are more customer requests this feature.

Append choices to lookup result is now supported in Forms 10.2.

Am I missing something here? The "Append choices to lookup results" does append, however it breaks displaying the lookup value.

For example; If we have a drop down with static values of Yes and No, and we have a lookup pulling in a value of Yes or No, and no NOT enable the "Append choices to lookup results", we receive the lookup value only. (displays but does not allow a user to change the value)

Now when we DO enable the "Append choices to lookup results", the display value from the lookup is blank. We must select the drop down and choose between Yes or No.

Is this a bug or expected behavior?

To test this theory I changed my static list to "Y" and "N", and the lookup value I left as "No". When I load the form, this displays:

I would of expected to see the lookup value "No" to be displayed.

When we click the drop down, this is available:

What am I missing? This can't be expected behavior.

If it is, a good feature request would be to have an option in this "default value" drop down to say 'lookup value':

Hi Shaun,

When there is only one result from lookup, it will auto select that value for drop down as there is only one choice. When you append the choices to the lookup result, since there are multiple choices in the list, it will not auto select the lookup value. I will add your idea of supporting configure lookup return value as default value in our feature requests.

Any updates on this? The current behavior is bewildering, to be honest. Why wouldn't a user want a looked up value to NOT be automatically selected in the dropdown, if there is only one?

In researching the Support Site, I see this has been a Feature Request for some time.

In the interim, here is my poor man's workaround:

  • Single Line Field with Lookup Rules.
  • Checkbox asking if the User wants to Update.
  • Show Dropdown Field only when Checkbox is checked.
  • Dropdown Field with approved list of values.

Still an issue.

This has been fixed with Forms 11 Update 3.

When the dropdown field has "Append choices to lookup results" selected and there is only one result from lookup rule, the lookup result will be auto selected.

You can see other changes of Forms 11 Update 3 from  https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1014413/list-of-changes-for-laserfiche-forms-11-update-3 and get Forms 11 Update 3 from Laserfiche 11 package  https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1014263/software-versions-and-fixes-included-in-the-laserfiche-11-download-package

When doing a database lookup on a drop down, even in version 10 it will only come up with the value in the database and no other choices.  If there is not a lookup, everything works as expected.
