Question

fill out pdf activity not reading fields correctly

asked on March 7, 2016

I have a PDF from that apparently was created in Lifecycle Designer.  I can edit this form in Lifecycle Designer and see that the fields were given clear, descriptive names (ex. Field_1, Field_2, Field_3).  However, when working in the workflow activity to fill out the pdf, Workflow does not read the field name.  It will display generic, duplicated fields names. (ex. 1a or CheckBox1, or Textfield1).  This creates a problem when trying to map tables since the field names are duplicated.

I did notice that in Lifecycle Designer the field name is called an "object" and I do not see any other methods for re-assigning names to fields.

I'm wondering if there is something specific to Lifecycle Designer I should be looking at to solve this or perhaps I am just missing something.

Any help would be welcome. Thanks!!

I am not sure which version of workflow you are using, but with 9.2 workflow does read the fields name correctly.

Thanks Tommy, I am using version 9.2 and usually I have no trouble with PDF fields.  However, this is the first PDF that I've tried that was created in Lifecycle Designer.  It will not allow me to edit the PDF in any other Adobe product we have, other than Lifecycle Designer.

Sorry, we just read the field names from the PDF. You might get a better answer to your question on Adobe's forums. Adobe Help seems to indicate you can rename fields in the hierarchy pane (page 665-666).

In working with some other PDF files, I discovered the issue.  It appears that if a tooltip exists in any given field, workflow will read the tooltip as the field name.

In this example, I set 3 fields in the PDF and named the Fields "Field 1, Field 2, Field 3" but put the value of "1" for the tool tip in each field.

Workflow read the value for each field as "1"

After removing the tool tip from each field, workflow read the field names correctly.

In this case, I was using workflow 10, I have not tested to see if I would get the same results in 9.
