Question

Has WebLink been replaced by WebAccess?

asked on May 20, 2015

The public has for a number of years accessed certain public records in our repository via WebLink. This longstanding practice, however, is about to change as our IT department will be shutting WebLink down permanently at the end of this month and providing public access to the same content via WebAccess.  I was always under the impression that these two services were aimed at two different user groups. Isn’t WebAccess an authenticated way for employees to interact with content in the repository and WebLink a stripped down “public portal”?

Hi David, we are conducting a free webinar on WebLink today at 10:00 am PST and a section within the presentation will discuss WebLink vs Web Access.  I highly encourage you to register, invite a representative from your IT department and receive a copy of the recording as well for distribution.  We have an engineer available to answer technical questions at the end of the presentation.

Here's the link to the webinar registration site:

I'm sure others will reply to this as well but I'd say you are correct in that WebLink and WebAccess are aimed at two different user groups.  WebLink is really dedicated to users who only need to view documents which, by setting up a public portal, will not require a user license.

It does seem kind of odd to switch from WebLink to WebAccess to access public records seeing as WebAccess does not use Public Portal licensing and would require a Named User license for each user.

That is correct that WebLink is typically meant for public use to access documents in the repository in a read-only manner. It also does support public portal licensing. WebLink 9 was just released earlier this year as well.

Does anyone know if Weblink 10 is on the LF roadmap? Wondering if Weblink will have the look and feel of WebAccess 10.

Thanks in advance.

Our publicly-announced plans are always available on the roadmap page.  I wouldn't expect a major release of WebLink until after the main Laserfiche 11 release.

We haven't really discussed yet how to evolve the look and feel of WebLink in the next version.  It might inherit some of the design elements from Web Access and the other web products, but it is a separate product that needs to solve different use cases.  Are you hoping that it looks more like Web Access, or are you hoping it doesn't change too much?

I would hope it looks more like WebAccess 10...
