Question

What file types are supported for streaming over Weblink 9?

asked on March 9, 2015

This morning we did some testing to look at what file types are supported for streaming video and audio over Weblink 9. We found that mp3 audio and mp4 video stream great. avi and wmv do not stream and go straight to direct download. We tested all of these in the latest IE, Firefox and Chrome.

Is there an official list of supported file types?

Furthermore, is this a server-side limitation, or unique to the end user's browser's capabilities?

Supported formats

Format IE9+ Firefox Chrome Safari (Windows) Safari (iOS) Safari (OSX) Opera 25+
H.264/MP4 Yes Yes Yes No Yes Yes Yes
WebM No Yes Yes No No No Yes
ogg No Yes Yes No No No Yes
ogv No Yes Yes No No No Yes
mp3 Yes Yes Yes No Yes Yes Yes
wav No Yes Yes No Yes Yes Yes
opus No Yes Yes No No No Yes
oga No Yes Yes No No No Yes

This table should be a good indicator of which file types we allow streaming for by default, and which browsers support them.

Note: Some browsers may need to have WebLink be a trusted site before it allows media streaming at all.

We don't have a list of officially supported extensions yet, but you can add additional file extensions to WebLink 9's web.config file. It's located in the <media> <extensions> tag.

I assume that adding extensions to that file will cause Weblink to try and stream them - but results may vary?

If so, we can all use this thread to add additional known working file types as we test them.
