Question

Laserfiche High Availability

asked on November 14, 2014

Is Laserfiche only supported in an HA environment in an active/passive mode? I have been reading through the documentation and it appears so, but I have a RIO customer that wants verification.

John - Was your client able to establish an acceptable Laserfiche fail-over configuration?

Hey John,

Yes, Laserfiche supports that sort of configuration.  Please reference one of the Answers posts regarding high availability, here and here.

Thanks Rob,

So to clarify for our customer, HA is not supported in an active/active mode? That was their goal but it appears Laserfiche is not supported in that mode. I had read where the LF server is cluster unaware and support was in an active/passive mode. And can you explain how License Manager and its activation comes into play in a failover environment? I have read the documentation but that seems unclear.

Thanks!

Hey John,

Yes, that is correct that Laserfiche does not support High Availability in Active/Active mode.  I know that this has been requested in the past, so I'll make sure to inform the developers that you've made this request as well.

I'm not quite sure on exactly what you mean about how License manager "comes into play" in a failover environment, but I spoke with some Laserfiche staff who told me that in some cases, customers have purchased two separate instances of License Manager and have one set up in each environment.  This is definitely not a requirement, but in lieu of putting in additional work when you need the failover environment to come live, having the License Manager already set up can expedite the process.

Thanks Rob for the quick response. That helps a lot. If they did not purchase an additional license manager, then they would need to deactivate, then reactivate LM in the DR environment if I am understanding correctly.

If I can bug you for one more question...as far as Workflow, are there Subscriber or MSMQ issues with a DR environment? It seems like I am reading now where people have been able to bring up workflow with minimal interaction with the newer WF versions.

Thanks again!

Hey John,

That is correct regarding the (de)activation of LM.

Of course you're not bugging me!  I love to be helpful and you can continue to ask questions as long as you have more of them :)  Just to let you know, it's quite helpful when you link the article/Answers post when mentioning something that you read; In this case, where you were able to find people bringing up workflow with minimal interaction.

You can find plenty of informaiton on disaster recovery and Workflow in the help files and in Laserfiche Answers (here and here).  Let me know if you have any quesitons after reading through this!
