Question

Rio Directory Server won't renew master license or register Server 9.2

asked on October 23, 2014

Trying to upgrade from Rio 9.1.1 to 9.2. Installed LF Directory Server successfully, and imported our old License Manager 8.3 database. It shows all our applications with their current licenses. Our registered server application instance is "max 9.1". If I edit the application instance the dropdownlist for application version is greyed out showing "8.3 - 9.1". I cannot change it to 9.2. If I try to add a new server application instance, the only options are 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3-9.1.

When you open our old master license file (lfdef.licx), the listed maximum version of our Laserfiche Server is 9.0. So I try to update our master license. There are three methods:

1) I use the activationtool.exe and choose version 9.2. I succesfully generate a lf.licx that looks like a master license file inside. In the Laserfiche Directory Server I go to settings -> renew master file -> Import master license file : "Failed to import license file: The product is not licensed. (LFDS10)(LMO4)" On the LF server, in the Laserfiche-Directory Service-Server/Operational trace event log, get event ID 4: "

The description for Event ID 4 from source Laserfiche-Directory Service-Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

d3eea48c-cd40-4dec-9621-cd4d515494d5
d3eea48c-cd40-4dec-9621-cd4d515494d5

The publisher has been disabled and its resource is not available. This usually occurs when the publisher is in the process of being uninstalled or upgraded"

immediately after that is event ID 2: "

The description for Event ID 2 from source Laserfiche-Directory Service-Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

2) settings -> renew master file -> renew: "Reactivation was not successful: The product is not licensed. (LFDS10)(LMO4)". I get the same two events in the event log.

3) settings -> renew master file ->Request master license with an activation key : "Activation was not successful: The product is not licensed. (LFDS10)(LMO4)". I get the same two events in the event log.

Also, every five minutes in the event log I get another event ID 2: "

The description for Event ID 2 from source Laserfiche-Directory Service-Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Even though it obviously has access to the database because it sees all my licensed application instances, etc., I ruled out security by both granting sysadmin fixed server role access to the service logon account on the target remote SQL Server instance and tried installing SQL Express locally using the standard install out of the box via the Laserfiche installer.

All Laserfiche components at 9.1.1 are on this Windows Server 2012 R2 box, and the SQL Server 2008 R2 instance is on a different machine.

Any help on getting a new master license or otherwise hints on getting a 9.2 Laserfiche Server application instance registered so that I can get LF Server installed/upgraded?

This was resolved on 10/30 by support, but I failed to update this thread until now. Hoping it will help others.

As it turns out we somehow had two different versions of Quick Fields licensed to one machine. Though we were using the 9.0 license, inexplicably the old 8.3 QF instance license was the "good" license. The 9.0 "bad" license caused the bad behavior described in the original post.

We resolved this by deleting both QF licenses, regenerating our Master license file, and reissuing a new QF license.

We are still on 9.1.x, but we are now prepared to try 9.2 upgrade (including License Manager -> Directory Server) again next week.

You may want to contact your reseller to open a support case. But to take a first stab at the issue: it seems like there are two issues here, 1) you cannot renew your master license and 2) a missing event source.

For issue 1, the error you are getting implies that your new version of the licenses is missing a product, feature, or resource (such as named users) that you currently have allocated. It's hard to tell because of the issue with the missing event source, but it is likely that d3eea48c-cd40-4dec-9621-cd4d515494d5 is the ProductLicenseUuid of the problematic product.

Issue 2 might be occurring if you are viewing the event viewer from a machine other than the one where Directory Server is installed. If you are already viewing the event from that machine, the issue may be solved by repairing the install.

Brianna,

I appreciate your response.

I am not concerned with #2 (a missing event source). The event log is viewed from the event viewer on the same consolidated LF server. Repairing the installation did not change the behavior.

My only concern is #1 (cannot renew our master license).

The way we resolved this was to revert our VM back to its snapshot and restore the SQL databases for good measure. Then using License Manager 8.3.1 I was able to use the right-click context menu to "add master license". I now have a new master license that allows maximum versions up to 9.2. When we next try to upgrade the application instances (like LF Server) then this key should work.

I assume the master license not renewing is a bug in LF Directory Server. I'll update this with what I find through Support. However, I welcome anyone else to chime in if you have experience with Directory Server 9.2.

Edit: Also, I searched all the license files and found no mention of that ProductLicenseUuid, so I don't know what that's about.

Robert, based on the licenses your reseller attached to the support case, the updated master license contains the wrong license block. Our Production department is correcting it and Tech Support will contact your reseller with instructions when the license is updated.
