Question

Weblink text search within an open document

asked on July 4, 2014

We have a client that often needs to provide guidance on how to search within an opened scanned document in Weblink.

Currently, a CTRL-F (browser's search) on a page image won't find the text, but if View Plain Text is selected, then CTRL-F will work fine in the browser.

It seems to me that this is an opportunity to add a Search Within Document function to Weblink.

A couple of ideas:

1) The "View Plain Text" option could be re-worded (perhaps only when scanned page images are shown) to something like "View Text And Search".

2) A Search icon could be added to to the icon bar, and if the user is viewing a scanned image it could switch to plain text and open a search window.

Looking forward to thoughts, ideas, etc. eg. maybe #1 can be easily changed in an existing Weblink install ?  Or perhaps I'm totally missing something.

Thanks in advance.

One way to get the word you want highlighted on the image is by doing a search for the word in the Quick Search toolbar or a text search within the Search Pane. When you click on an scanned document that was returned in the search result, the document viewer will highlight your search phrase:

If I'm reading the OP correctly, they are requesting to be able to search for text within an already open document. Obviously, the browser's search won't work because it can't read the text in the images, but I agree that it would be nice if WebLink could do something like that natively.

Alex posted this on my behalf, and Devin, that is exactly what we are looking for - the same Search Document functionality available in Web Access.

There hasn't been much talk about the future of WebLink, so it's hard to say what's going to happen with these kinds of requests. It seems that most of their efforts are currently focused on WebAccess "10".

My hope is that when the new version of WebAccess is released, it will be able to function as a WebLink replacement by means of configuration and/or the license used to access it.

Cathy Lee, where is the Quick Search toolbar? I just have the Search, that is next to Browse, but that search the repository, not the document.

That's the search Cathy was referring to:

When you click on an scanned document that was returned in the search result, the document viewer will highlight your search phrase:

If you run a repository search, then open to the document you want, the search phrase will be highlighted.

It's 2018 and this is still an issue.
