Question

7857: Invalid character in search string.

asked on February 7, 2014 Show version history

We're in the process of upgrading from Version 7 to Version 9 and I am trying to get all of my templates and fields in order.

I have been searching using a specific template with no information within any of the fields and when I search it is returining an error "7857: Invalid character in search string."

I have tried everything in the help file and none of them apply because I am not entering anything and leaving the fields blank to return anything associated with that template.  Even placing a * within any of the fields does not help.

I am trying to get a count for all documents that are attached to each template, is there a better method to do this that would also show files I may not have permissions to?

I am realizing some templates only contain a few documents and seem to be the result of human error.

How do I correct this search? And what is the better method to count documents attached to each template?

Thanks!

What is the advanced search syntax being generated? I don't have any ideas yet as to what might be causing the problem, but seeing the advanced search syntax will help.

To find the advanced search syntax:

  • In Client, add the search type "Advanced Search Syntax", making sure the "Include advanced search criteria in query" box is unchecked, then run your search.
  • In Web Access, click on the icon with curly braces in the upper right part of the search pane

I don't remember if Version 7 had this, but in 8+ you can give yourself the "Manage Entry Access" privilege in the Administration Console, which allows you to see all documents, but not open all documents (of course with that privilege, you can then give yourself the rights to do so). This means they show up in search results, even if you can't open them.

But I'm guessing in your case, you only have access to your area, and your organization is siloed such that you don't have a central Project Manager handling the upgrade for the whole organization. In that case, I know in 8+ you can right click a folder and click properties to see exactly the total document count in that folder and all subfolders. So you could give yourself a maximum number. Then doing your search on each template, you can see how close all of your template document counts add up to getting to your maximum number. Then you'd know exactly how many you're missing in your Department's folder areas.

Found the answer thanks to your help.

I assume since were on 7.2.1 I can't access advanced search quiet like the method above.

However under "Text"  and selecting the "Advanced Text Search" tab I was able to find this:

{[DS-County Counsel Request]:[Date Sent"}

=====

To me the above seemed like it was looking for the "Date Sent" as a default, even if you leave everything blank wasn't good enough.

When I inserted a large range into date fields the documents appeared.  So treat it as if the Date is a "required" search field.  When I deleted everything and left only {[DS-County Counsel Request]} The search was working just as all the others with all nulls.

=====

Maybe I should start another question, but is there a better way to "definitively" note the amount of documents for each template?  I this is what I am using the search for, however I am told there is the possibility documents would not appear if I did not have permission to those documents.  I would like to confirm templates that are returning no documents in the search, are indeed empty.

Thanks!
