Question

Question

Installing Forms on two servers.

asked on January 10, 2014

I've seen on the site that you can have multiple instances of Forms installed using the same license. (I assume only if you have RIO)  **I'm referencing the article named "Forms Deployment in Rio"

- Does this mean that the instances have to be on the same server?
- Or can they be on different servers using the same license?

I'm trying to install Forms in my DMZ for outside access but I also use Forms inside my domain.  Our network folks don't like to open holes for outside IP's to inside servers.  When I point the server in my DMZ to the license I created for the inside server I get a message stating that the license is not valid for this product.

- Is that because the Hardware Fingerprint in the license does not match the outside server?

If this is not possible using the same license can you suggest a way to have this work.  Maybe using a non-portal license inside and the portal license in the DMZ?  I'm looking at using version 9.1 of Forms by the way.

That's exactly the point of portal - that allows you to have public access so yeah, you'd presumably want that external. Authenticated users will be able to access both systems, it's just that the version with portal ALSO allows public user access.

Forms 9.1 is provided with two activation keys (assuming you have Forms Portal). The 'standard' key is without portal and allows for unlimited activations. The 'portal' key only allows as many activations of portal as you are licensed for. The 'standard' scenario is probably what you are seeing with regards to being able to use it on multiple systems. You still need to activate each system however - you can't just use the exact same license file. Each system will need their own activated license file matching the hwfp of the machine.

Justin -  I am on the RIO licensing plan and therefore do not have the two different activation keys.  So that brings up a new question.  What does the portal allow you to do that "non-portal" does not?

Should I be able to install the Forms portal in the DMZ and the non-portal Forms on the Laserfiche server inside my domain and only use one license.  Will this work?

Craig,

You should be able to register multiple application instances (ie, multiple machines) for the same Forms node in the Rio License Manager. Only one of them can have the Forms Portal flag though.

Oh, sorry about that. What I said for activation keys (for Avante) also applies for different instances for Rio - as Miruna notes. The difference between the two types of Forms registration depends on if you have the Forms portal UI module. The Forms Portal is an optional component that allows for external public access to Forms. If you do not have Forms Portal, you will only have one Forms block in your License Manager.

In either case, you can register multiple instances of Forms with this main Forms block, just make sure you register each machine independently.

Note that if you have not updated your License Manager master license in a while you might not see this functionality. I'd recommend reactivating your master license, which you can do directly in the License Manager administration console - it will ensure your license is up to date with currently functionality, such as the ability to set up multiple Forms servers.

Miruna - Thanks for the info.  I am able to create 2 application instances for Forms one with the Portal and the other without.

Justin - I updated my master license today and am able to create instances for Forms up to 9.1.

From what I understand about the portal version is it is so non Laserfiche users can submit forms to Laserfiche and the non-portal is for authenticated/Laserfiche users.  Is this a fair assumption?

What I'm trying to figure out is, if I should put the portal version in the DMZ so I can have public access and leave the non-portal for inside my domain since they will all be authenticated Laserfiche Users?

Justin - Thanks for all your input on this question.  I will re-arrange my configuration so that the portal is external and the non-portal is internal. Is it OK to keep this question open until my configuration is working in case I have anymore questions?

Thanks for all your help.
