Web Client Dropdowns Hanging and Crashing Browser

asked on August 4, 2021

This just recently started happening, so I'm also investigating recent changes, but thought I would throw this out there to see if anybody else has seen this.  When I'm in Web Client, when clicking in a dropdown to select an item, the browser (Chrome) will hang and completely crash/close after about a 1 minute.  Microsoft Edge will hang, but not crash.  Note that this is not related to the number of items in the dropdown.  It's happened while clicking template field dropdowns as well as setting the folder scope on folder security which contains just 9 entries.  It does not happen in Forms or any other web page with dropdowns, just LF Web Client.  Any ideas?

I have this happen in Edge with a dynamic template field that is doing a lookup and it freezes and then crashes the browser.  I had assumed that my table was too large (1700+ records) and that was causing it.  I just tested in Chrome and get the same results, maybe you're on to something.

I am getting more reports of this recently as well.  It seems Firefox does not have the issue.  Not everyone is willing to switch however.  I have one customer that has a long list (a few hundred) that was having issues with chrome more than a month ago but now I am getting reports with even approval dropdowns.

So, no word yet from Laserfiche, but it appears that (for us) it has something to with Laserfiche Connector running and perhaps the presence of the command line switches required for the Chrome browser (MS Edge is also based on Chromium).

 --remote-debugging-port=9222 --force-renderer-accessibility

Turning the Connector off and removing those switches from the Chrome command line seems to fix the issue.  Going to pass this info to DocuNav and Laserfiche and see if they can make sense of it.

Yeah, I could not reproduce this issue in Firefox (Internet Explorer also works fine), so, for now, it's a Chrome/Edge issue.  We're not in the position to switch to Firefox, hoping Laserfiche will address this.

Seems to have started around the time that Chrome 92.0.4515.107 (desktop) was released.

Seeing same thing with a Customer who is on Chrome 92.0.4515.131 (Official Build) (64-Bit).

Intermittent.

Laserfiche has now reproduced this issue (as of Monday, 08/09/2021) and is actively working on it.

Eric,

Do you have a case opened with LF Support (Or your VAR does)?

If so, was this how you found out the LF can reproduce this and if so, do you know if a Bug was logged, by LF for this?

Thanks Again,

Jeff Curtis

Our VAR and Laserfiche have gone silent on this issue, not sure what's happening.

Laserfiche has requested more information from me today (Windows logs, Chrome status in Task Manager when a crash occurs, selecting security scope also causes freeze) which I've provided. Waiting...

If you are running into this issue and you haven't already, please open a support case. We need more information to isolate the cause and ensure all these reports are the same issue.

How can I open a support case directly with Laserfiche?  I don't feel that I should need to have my VAR be a middleman pass through to provide info for a bug.
