Question

"Object reference is not set to an instance of an object"

asked on December 11, 2020 Show version history

Hi,

I am trying to import a PDF document into Laserfiche, but each time I try, I keep getting the message  "object reference is not set to an instance of an object". I have tried drag and drop and the import button, but no luck. What can be the problem here please?

Thank you,

Olga

Hi Olga

This happens to us from time-to-time when trying to upload large pdfs that have been created by combining several other pdf files from different sources into one file.  Its usually one of the documents used in the bunch that has a problem, but that can be very tiresome to find.

We have found that a quick way to fix the problem is to open the large file and use the Print to PDF function.  That creates a new pdf that is a single image.  Works like a charm.

This is something you will probably need to open a support case with your Solution Provider for. The feature seems to work in general, so it may be specific to your installation or even your files. You might try opting out of "generate text" and "generate pages" during import, to see if that gets you further.

Will do, thank you Brian!

I have been able to import the document by opting out of the "generate text" and "generate pages" options. Opting out of only one of the two didn't help, both had to be unchecked. Does it mean that the problem is with the file itself, or would I still need to open a support ticket to fully understand why this is happening? Thank you in advance...

My guess is there's something about the file that is causing the page extraction to fail, so fully resolving it would require a support case.

Was a resolution to this ever discovered? We have a client who is testing out V11 of the desktop client. They get that message as well when importing documents and then attempting to generate pages.

Here is the full error message for reference:

Error generating pages for 'Web Link_ Section 508-compliant Public Web Portal _ Public Access _ Remote A.pdf': Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

This looks like a problem that is specific to that PDF. Please open a support case so we can get a sample PDF to troubleshoot.
