Recycle Bin Allows Delete Despite Not Having Permission

asked on June 23, 2017

We don't allow our users to delete documents from the majority of our repository, and most users cannot delete anything anywhere in the repository.  We've recently enabled the recycle bin functionality as it was a prerequisite for an add-on functionality provided by our VAR.

I've noticed documents showing up in the recycle bin showing they were deleted by employees who do not have the ability to delete.

Any idea how this is happening?

This can happen in some cases, such as if a user imports files but then the import fails or is canceled.  The empty document is created as one of the first steps of the import process (so that the files have somewhere to go).  If the process is then canceled, the empty document gets cleaned up (which sends it to the recycle bin).

Regardless of feature or access rights, if a user can create a document, they also have permission to remove it in this way until the initial creation/import/metadata assignment process is completed.

The ability to purge entries from the recycle bin is controlled by the purge entries privilege, set on a user or group wide level in the administration console. Check to see if this has been inadvertently granted to users. When the recycle bin is enabled, delete controls sending something to the bin in the first place.

Thank you @████████ - my concern is not the ability to purge items from the recycle bin, my concern is that they are somehow sending items to the recycle bin in the first place.  They swear they are not deleting items, but there are items in the recycle bin that indicate they deleted them...

There shouldn't be any way for users without delete rights to send documents to the recycle bin. Make sure they aren't inheriting the rights from a group.

According to the "Effective Rights" view of the "Access Rights" screen - these employees do not have the ability to delete documents.

Are the recycled items actually documents, or pages from documents that still exist?

I wish I could view the documents without restoring them...

I've checked a few of them, and so far, they all have zero pages.  I don't know what is up with that...
